Appropriation of Green Space

In the context of relations between the Global North and South, we encounter so-called “green grabbing”, a situation where ecological agendas mask the seizure of land and resources, thereby framing the human-nature relationship within outdated environmental models.

Practices of a colonialist nature – readily identifiable during the “Great Acceleration,” when human activity manifested through the exploitation of fossil fuels – are now being employed to cement the power of major corporations under an ecological guise, moving away from the equitable approach to a low-carbon economy outlined in the Paris Agreement.

An exploitative logic is currently asserting itself more forcefully, positioning the energy transition as a driver of inequality and paving the way for new modes of land use, as sunlight and wind are increasingly viewed as natural resources to be factored into the utilization and appropriation of territory.
