The Russian invasion of Ukraine increases the degree of vulnerability in several sectors, including the environment. Unlike the 20th century, the environmental variable is already on the map of the worst consequences of international conflicts, making its importance evident in the entire context of war, a fact already exposed by Ukrainian authorities a few years ago.
The direct relationship between this invasion and a scenario of ecological disasters is undeniable, considering the danger of contamination by radioactivity due to attacks on reactors, which can also have serious effects on Russian territory, not forgetting the risks of gas leaks and the groundwater contamination by hazardous metals.
Clearly, this war will have a high cost for Sustainable Development, destroying infrastructure, increasing food prices, limiting the energy transition, and placing the increase in poverty as a very serious result of the humanitarian side of this confrontation.
